DIRECTIONS
FROM SCOTTSDALE ROAD:
1. On SCOTTSDALE ROAD, go NORTH past the CAREFREE HIGHWAY into the Town of Carefree. In Carefree, SCOTTSDALE ROAD changes its name to TOM DARLINGTON DRIVE.
2. Continue NORTH on TOM DARLINGTON DRIVE until you come to the left-hand turn-lane for NEVER MIND TRAIL – 2nd street on left after (NORTH) of STAGECOACH PASS.
3. Turn left (WEST) onto NEVER MIND TRAIL and stay on it until it tees at CAREFREE DRIVE.
4. Go left (NORTHWEST) on CAREFREE DRIVE to PIEDRA GRANDE DRIVE.
5. Turn right (NORTH) onto PIEDRA GRANDE DRIVE. (only way to turn)
6. We are the first house on the left (WEST) side of the street – it is split-face block with a rusty metal roof and the driveway access is BEFORE you get to the house (SOUTH of the house). The driveway entrance has pavers and the first part goes up between stack-stone retaining walls, then the rest is gravel and winds around to the front of the house. The front door is on the SOUTH side of the house, facing Black Mountain.
OR you can come up CAVE CREEK ROAD – in which case you will be approaching our house from the NORTH:
FROM CAVE CREEK ROAD:
1. Going EAST on CAVE CREEK ROAD, turn EXTREME right onto BELLA VISTA DRIVE.
2. Turn left (SOUTH) onto PIEDRA GRANDE DRIVE (only way to turn).
3. We are the last house on the right (WEST) side of the street BEFORE you get to NEVER MIND TRAIL. It is a split-face block with a rusty metal roof and the driveway access is AFTER you pass the house (SOUTH OF THE HOUSE). The driveway entrance has pavers and the first part goes up between stack-stone retaining walls, then the rest is gravel and winds around to the front of house. The front door is on the SOUTH side of the house, facing Black Mountain.
British car “camping” trip & tour
| September 20, 2008 | to | September 21, 2008 |
Well, here are the promised details about our upcoming Tour to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park and subsequent “camping” event! Although this is a Desert Centre Triumph Club event, we are inviting any and all British Car enthusiasts for this unique and scenic drive up to the mountains (and out of the HEAT, we hope) to visit the WORLDS LARGEST natural travertine bridge. After the state park, we plan on returning to Payson for lunch, and those not planning on spending the night may return to the valley.
If you are among those who can make a weekend of it, we shall head on over to the Payson Campground and RV Park to set up camp. I plan on just taking a small dome tent and a couple of sleeping bags and having our meals in Payson, but you can opt for whatever level of the “camping experience” you wish. We’ll plan on providing a campfire of some sort, so roasting marshmallows and S’mores should be do-able.
The Campground indicates that tent sites should be no problem, but if you are planning on bringing a trailer or RV, reservations might be wise. The campground is pretty much in Payson, so if you wish to “hang out” with the group and then retire to one of the many local hotels, that is another option.
Now, down to the specifics! The date is September 20th (and 21st) We’ll meet at 8:00am on Saturday at the Chevron station on the NE corner of Ellsworth Rd. and Southern Ave. which is one block North of Hwy 60 in Mesa. According to Google Maps it’s 51 miles to Payson from there, and an additional 13 miles out to the Tonto Bridge. The State Park charges $3.00/per adult (under 13 free). We’ll plan on providing a snack and coffee/beverages at the Park to tide us over until lunch in Payson. Campsites are $20 (for 2 people).
If our chosen meeting sight is inconvenient for you, I suppose you may catch us where the Bush Hwy meets the Beeline, but you would miss out on one of the more fun stretches of road in the valley! Usury Pass to the Bush Hwy, by Saguaro Lake out to the Beeline is very scenic and “entertaining”… it’s where Dave Riddle shot his in-car video that graced our home page at the DCTRA website for years.
If you know you can make this event, I would appreciate an RSVP so as to get an idea of what to expect, but last minute entries are welcome! You may contact me (Stu Lasswell) at debnstu2@yahoo.com or by phone at (480) 786-0116 for additional info. I hope to see a great group, and maybe make it an annual event. See you there!
