DCTRA @ PIR
| January 31, 2009 |
On arrival park in the area of in-field Turn 2 (track maps will be suppied to those who RSVP). At Lunch time we will form up in the east end of the Cold Pits and when the last group race/DE comes off track and the workers break for Lunch we will take the cars out on track behind the Pace Car for a lapping session. Figure maybe six laps or about 15 minutes. Speed probably kept to about 50mph.
For those that think 50 will be too slow consider that every student I have ever had as PIR goes through the Oval portion of the track at no faster then 65 their first time out and this is in a session with no speed limit. I happened to watch a little bit of the last NASCAR race at PIR and saw that the telemetry off their cars was showing a speed through the part of the oval that you will be on being no faster then 110.
Then the cars would come back in and park in the same area near infield Turn 2. We will have lunch (sandwiches, sodas, etc…) and watch some of the races/groups from there when sessions start backup after Lunch.
I will be teaching the regular HPDE1 class that morning so would meet up with you after the 2nd classroom session for the lapping event.
Cost: FREE. Just have the club pay for the sub sandwiches and drinks.
NASA provides pretty good sub sandwiches (from Subway) for the Instructors for our lunch so could have them bring in a couple of extra platters for us and we just bring a cooler with drinks and anything else we would want to have.
All you would need to bring if you wanted was a chair to sit in and eat lunch. Then wander the paddock looking at some of the cool cars that are always out for these events.

Ok folks here are the additional details…
NASA (http://www.clubracingaz.com/) will be running at Phoenix International Raceway this coming Saturday (1/31/09).

This means that I will be in the classroom with my Students (HPDE1) from 8:00am to 9:30am. My Students will be on Track for their first session at 9:45am. I’ll again be in the classroom with them from 10:20am to 11:15am. They will go on track for their second session at 11:25am until the lunch break at 11:55am
The 30 minute lunch break for workers is scheduled for 11:55am to 12:25pm
Our planned Pace Car lapping session is to occur during the Lunch break.
Immediately following our coming off track will be the qualifying event for the Small-bore racecars which in turn is followed by the Big-bore racecars. Perfect timing in that the 30 minutes following our outing the Racecars will be running for their qualifying sessions.
The two race groups will be running together for their 30 minute Race at 2:25pm.
Since I will be with my students when you arrive I’m hoping that John Horton will be coming out to help direct you to where you need to go.
Take I-10 to the Avondale Exit and go south until you run into PIR at the base of the Mountain. Turn into the first entrance to the facility after you come across the bridge. (print out and consult the map that I will put on the website (http://www.dctra.org/?p=267).
Follow the yellow line indicated on the map. When you come to the area marked with a red X you will be stopped to sign the Track Waivers and be given a wristband.
Continue through the tunnel and into the paddock following the yellow line shown on the map. The area marked with a yellow X is the planned area for us to park over by the Road Course Turn 2.
To enter the track for our session you will drive back toward the paddock area and follow the Red line shown on the map to take you under the Pedestrian bridge. The grid worker at the entrance to the track will direct you to the Grid where we will get ready to go on track behind the pace car.
Obviously if you have timed your arrival to be just before the session is planned (hopefully not arriving at 11:55am but more realistically by at least 11:30am) you could probably head directly toward the Grid area. That is where I will be seeing my Students off with their in-car instructors.
After we come off track we’ll drive back to the Turn 2 area for lunch. I have not heard yet if NASA will be doing Subs or Pizza. Whichever it is I have asked them to supply us to (I gave them a head count of between 25-30 with probably 15 cars based on the RSVP and other enquiries that I have received (see below and if you want to come and your name is not on the list let me know ASAP!).
As I stated before your car does NOT need a rollbar. You do NOT need a helmet. The weather forecast for Saturday sounds like it will be fantastic with a forecast high of 76 and Sunny.
If you want to come but your TR is not running so you think you can’t come bring the family “truckster” instead.
I would recommend that you might want to bring a folding chair if you want to sit down, although you will certainly be tempted to walk the paddock to see the cars on track from various vantage points as well as to just see the cars in the paddock.
Here is a link to a video at Youtube that I use in my Classroom. It is one of our Instructors out in his Honda S2000.
